Repost information from earlier today:

Hi everyone,

Our father, Steen, was diagnosed this autumn with the dementia disease Primary Progressive Aphasia after an extended medical examination. PPA originates from Alzheimers and primarily affects the language and comprehension centres, which is also very evident in our fathers case. You may notice that he sometimes has difficulty finding specific words or mixes up words, and that he may struggle to understand certain questions or contexts. Our experience is that the best help in these situations is to guide him by suggesting the word he might be looking for, or by asking the same question in a simpler or different way.

Some of you may naturally have wondered why he no longer replies to messages and emails as regularly as he used to, and this is the reason. Our father has limited awareness of his illness, which means he may find it difficult to ask for help himself or recognise his limitations in challenging situations but he is very receptive to help when it is offered, so please dont hesitate to step in and assist. Fortunately, many of his abilities are still functioning well and remain relatively unaffected. Because the disease mainly affects the language and comprehension centre, he may at times appear worse than he actually is.

For many years, our father has built speeders and handled various repairs. At the moment, we are a bit unsure to what extent he will still be able to continue with this, but we are working on finding a setup where he can still help in ways that are meaningful and feasible.

We very much hope that our father can continue to participate in as many mini-race events as possible, as this community has always been unique and has meant a great deal to him. Many of his friends are here. One of the best preventive tools against the progression of the illness is social interaction and as much conversation as possible to maintain language skills. The best support you can give him is simply to talk with him when you see him.

The purpose of this message is simply to inform everyone about the difficult situation, so that you also understand why he has changed behaviour. We are very happy to help and work on solutions if you experience that our father does not respond, if any issues arise with one thing or another, or if you have any questions or experiences with him that are relevant for us to know. Please involve us sooner rather than later. You can reach us at +45 23113732 (Alberte) and +45 51336434 (Victor).

Warm regards,
Alberte & Victor
